Mesabi, manufactured by L&M Radiator, isn't a standard soldered or welded core — it's a flexible core design built from individually replaceable copper or aluminum tubes, held in header plates by flexible rubber seals instead of rigid seams. That design is what lets a Mesabi radiator, charge air cooler, or oil cooler be brought back to full cooling capacity tube by tube, rather than being scrapped or fully replaced over a single damaged tube.
As an authorized center, we're trained and equipped to service Mesabi's flexible core system to factory standards — from a routine clean and pressure test up through full tube and seal replacement.
How The Mesabi Design Works
Unlike a conventional core with tubes soldered or welded into a solid frame, Mesabi's cooling tubes sit individually in header plates, sealed with flexible fluorocarbon rubber rather than a rigid joint.
- Individual tubes — each tube is a separate, replaceable component, not part of one fused core.
- Flexible rubber seals — absorb vibration, shock, and thermal expansion that would crack a soldered seam.
- No soldered seams to fail — damage is isolated to a single tube instead of spreading through the core.
- Field repairable — a damaged tube can often be pulled and replaced without removing the unit from the equipment.
What We Offer
1. CLEAN & PRESSURE TEST: Full external cleaning with high-pressure air or water, followed by pressure testing to confirm every tube and seal is holding.
2. INDIVIDUAL TUBE REPLACEMENT: We identify and replace only the damaged tubes in the core — no need to scrap or rebuild the whole unit over one bad tube.
3. RUBBER SEAL REPLACEMENT: Worn or damaged fluorocarbon rubber seals are replaced at the header plate to restore a leak-free seal around each tube.
4. HEADER PLATE & TANK REPAIR: Repair or replacement of header plates, tanks, and inlet/outlet connections that support the tube array.
5. FULL TUBE & SEAL SERVICE: When a unit needs it, we replace the full set of tubes and seals in the core, returning it to 100% cooling capacity — Mesabi's flexible core is designed to be rebuilt this way over and over, unlike a standard core that gets replaced wholesale.
